The Governator and Nichols

Schwarzenegger's glitzy eco-conferences, even Obama's video talk may not mean real change; big first step would be to fire ARB chair, suggest Greens

BEVERLY HILLS (November 19, 2008) - Glitzy eco-conferences like the Global Climate Summit hosted by Gov. Schwarzenegger this week here - punctuated by a video talk by President-Elect Obama - are a welcome sign attitudes about climate change are changing, but they often don't translate to real change, said a Green Party environmental expert today.

In fact, Wes Rolley, a California resident and co-chair of the U.S. Green Party EcoAction Committee, charges that one of the best things Schwarzenegger could do to help the environment would be to fire the chair of the Air Resources Board.

SACRAMENTO (November 14, 2008) - The Green Party of California endorsed mass, worldwide demonstrations this Saturday (November 15) in every state in the nation, including California, protesting the passage of Proposition 8, California's anti-gay marriage amendment, as well as other anti-gay ballot initiatives in Arkansas, Arizona and Florida.

More than 1 million people are expected to participate. In California, demonstrations are being planned in at least 65 cities, including Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Oakland/Berkeley, Fresno, Long Beach and Bakersfield, according to JoinTheImpact.com, which is organizing the national protests.

Throwing money away

Governor's tax plan called 'regressive' by Green Party, another hit on working women & men; upping vehicle tax would bring in more money from Arnold's Humvees alone

SACRAMENTO (November 7, 2008) - The Green Party of California called Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed sales tax increase and his plan to force state employees to work holidays without holiday pay "regressive" - and another example of a refusal by the wealthy to really pitch in to help solve the state's budget mess.

"Sales taxes are inherently regressive, disproportionately relying upon the limited resources of the working poor to balance a prison-heavy budget," said Paul Franklin, a Green Party official on the Live Oak School District (Santa Cruz County) Board. Proposed cuts to public primary education would be "devastating on the morale of already over-worked and underpaid teachers," he added.

Ballot box

State Green Party wins mayor spot, may put 2 on SF Board of Supervisors, and amass at least 5 wins statewide after Tuesday's election

SACRAMENTO (November 5, 2008) - The Green Party will assume the No. 1 elected office in another California city, and may yet have two members on the powerful San Francisco Board of Supervisors after preliminary results were announced for Tuesday's election.

Greens, who already hold about 50 elected posts throughout the state, claimed at least five victories, including one for mayor, one for the SF Board of Supervisors.

Greens poised to collect big victories Nov. 4, including two supervisor posts in San Francisco; Just 3 state propositions garner support of Green Party

SACRAMENTO (October 31, 2008) - Twenty-three members of the Green Party are on the California ballot Tuesday - including presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney - with the party poised to collect several big victories, including two supervisor seats in San Francisco. Greens already hold about 50 elected posts throughout the state.

And, the Green Party of California is officially endorsing just three state propositions - Prop. 2 (farm animal protection), Prop. 5 (Non-violent offenders) and Prop. 12 (vet bonds). Greens are opposing Props. 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, and are taking no position on Prop. 1A. (See this link for full details).

Money money money

Billion dollar profits of Chevron targeted by Greens in Richmond to help youth and the environment; Green Party mayor touts Measure T passage

RICHMOND (October 29, 2008) - Greens are not just supporting - but in the case of Richmond mayor Gayle McLaughlin - spearheading a measure in Richmond which would cost Chevron's refinery about $26.5 million a year, more than 400 times what the billion-dollar oil producer is now paying Richmond.

Even if the measure does pass, it appears Chevron wouldn't be hurting. The company pocketed net profits of nearly $19 billion in 2007, and banked profits of $6 billion alone in the 2nd quarter of 2008.

IRV Demonstration

In the period leading up to the Feb 5th Presidential Primary, the Electoral Reform Working Group conducted a demonstration of Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) using the Green Party candidates. This mock election was conducted on a public web site, so the results are not official. But it is a good example of IRV in use.

The Green Party advocates ranked-choice voting systems, such as IRV, to improve the democracy of our electoral system.
